Minette Bay Lodge Fly Fishing Species

Chinook

‘Tarpons of the North’ aptly describes these enormously powerful Salmon. Arriving in our pristine rivers in spring and early summer, Chinook salmon provide, pound for pound, the best fight a fly fisherman will find anywhere in the world. These giants of the North Pacific average 30 pounds and commonly attain weights of over 50 pounds. The Skeena and Kalum Rivers are home to the world’s largest Chinook salmon, boasting the sport caught world record at 99 ¼ pounds. Very few fishermen worldwide have yet attempted to land a Chinook salmon on the fly. Our guides at Minette Bay Lodge have an intimate knowledge of our local river systems, maximizing the chance of perhaps 3 – 7 hookups daily, and the likelihood of landing 1-3 bright chrome Chinook each day.

Minette Bay Lodge offers Chinook fishing in both spring and summer. Our spring season begins on April 20th and lasts until the end of May, when both Chinook and Steelhead are often hooked the same day. Our summer season lasts from late June until the beginning of August. We Spey fish with heavy sink tips and large flies for these magnificent Salmon, and Minette Bay Lodge supplies all of the equipment, flies and instruction for both expert anglers and those that are not yet familiar with the technique of fishing with these double handed rods.

Steelhead

Minette Bay Lodge offers both Spring and Summer run Steelhead.  During the Spring we fish the world famous Kalum and Kitimat Rivers as well as several remote coastal rivers for these chrome bright fish. At this time of year the fishing is particularly exciting as both Steelhead and Chinook salmon can be caught on the same day. Our spring season begins on March 15th.

During August and September we target the majestic Skeena River, known for producing the largest and most abundant steelhead in the world. Average runs exceeding 60,000 fish. Ranging in size from 8 - 25 pounds or more, these magnificent fish are amongst the most prized sport fish in the world. Average days may produce 3 - 6 hookups and one might expect to land between 1 - 3 fish. Steelhead will capture you heart with their beauty and amazing fighting capabilities. Fly fishermen from around the world have caught “steelhead fever” returning year after year, yearning for another encounter with our majestic Steelhead.

Minette Bay Lodge recommends 8-9 weight rods for these fantastic fighters and on the larger systems Spey rods are quite often used. A variety of flies from leech to dry fly patterns are effective for enticing Steelhead. We use a wide assortment of lines, tipits and flies to meet changing water conditions and fish preferences.

Coho

The North Coast Coho’s wild runs and aerial performance provide excellent sport. Arriving in mid August, runs of fresh silver bright Coho continue to enter their natal streams well into early winter. Our season begins on August 20th, running through to October 30th, when there are large numbers of bright silver fish.

Coho offer both the experienced and inexperienced fly fisherman tremendous opportunities to land several fish for each day spent on the river, and North Coast BC Coho are 2-3 times the size of their Alaskan cousins.

Minette Bay recommends rod weights of 7-9 and intermediate and full sinking tips with 10- 12 lb tipits, and we use streamer and leach pattern flies. We provide several proven patterns.

Trout

Coastal Sea-run Cutthroat Trout offer fantastic sport providing incredible wet and dry fly opportunities. Often overlooked by anglers these fish average 2-3lbs with larger fish attaining weights in the 5-6 lb range.

These fish are unique among most species of trout in that they are anadromous in nature. This means that they spend part of their lives feeding in salt water, allowing them to reach a larger size than resident fish.

Minette Bay Lodge targets cutthroat year round. Rod sizes of 5-6 weight with both sinking and floating lines are used depending on time of year and water conditions. The hundreds of alpine lakes in the mountains around Minette Bay Lodge offer fantastic Rainbow fishing, and Dolly Varden and Bull Trout are found throughout our range aswell.

Chum, Sockeye and Pinks

These plentiful salmon are often caught while targeting Chinook and Coho salmon in late Summer.

Although not as prized as other species, these fish provide excellent sport and are considered by Minette Bay Lodge to be a bonus fishery.

Chum, Sockeye and Pink salmon migration times vary from river to river. These species begin arriving in large numbers in early summer and continue through September.
